Depending on the degree of discomfort caused by glare to the eyes, glare can be divided into ① light adaptation glare ② discomfort glare ③ disabling glare.

1. Photopic glare is a manifestation of decreased vision caused by moving from a dark room, tunnel or other dark place to a bright place.

2. Discomfort glare The uncomfortable feeling in bright light is related to looking at a fixed high-brightness area all the time. Discomfort glare depends on the contrast between perceived brightness and surrounding brightness, and the threshold of discomfort glare (light sensitivity) varies greatly between individuals. 3. Disabling glare The glare source itself is too bright, too messy, or there is a problem with the refractive medium, resulting in a light curtain illumination on the retinal imaging, reducing visual performance and visual clarity. Most of the vision loss caused can be recovered. If permanent vision damage occurs, it is usually not considered as glare.

The common point between photopic glare and discomfort glare is that they both cause visual discomfort. The difference between the two lies in the scene: the former is a state from dark to bright, while the latter has a fixed glare source without switching state.
