What is presbyopia?
As age increases, the adjustment ability of the lens gradually decreases, causing patients to have symptoms such as difficulty seeing near.
So that when looking at near distances, a convex lens must be added to the original refractive error that has been corrected to be able to see clearly. This phenomenon is called presbyopia.
Factors involved in the occurrence and development of presbyopia
NO.1 Age
With the changes in the pace of life and our personal living habits, our reading distance has gradually changed from nearly 40cm to 33cm when looking at mobile phones.
As a result, the adjustment ability we need to see near increases, and the age at which presbyopia appears gradually advances from the original age of 40 to about 37 years old.
NO.2 Degree/habits/height and other factors
Of course, even if two patients are of the same age, it does not mean that they have the same presbyopia. The sooner or later the onset of presbyopia and its severity are also related to other factors:
① Original refractive error status
Hyperopia requires greater adjustment power to see near than myopia. Generally speaking, presbyopia symptoms appear earlier.
② Eye habits
The closer you look at a distance, the longer it takes, and the earlier your presbyopia occurs.
③ Effects of drugs
Because of the effect of drugs on the ciliary muscle, taking insulin, diuretics, etc. will cause presbyopia earlier.
④ Other influencing factors
Poor lighting conditions for close work and poor general health will also lead to early presbyopia.
In fact, presbyopia is a very normal physiological phenomenon and not a serious pathological condition.
